Evaluation

I cannot believe I eventually managed to finish my first year in makeup & hair design!
I am exceptionally satisfied with the improvement of my skills and progression of who I am today. The makeup in motion practical sessions have been great on the grounds, that I learnt how to create designs inspired by the British history and horror series, how to work clean and correct, how to manage my time in order to achieve the tasks and to improve especially after failures.
To be completely honest, in this year of studying makeup & hair design, there were a lot of ups and downs for me because it took time while I got used to the system, teachers and classmates and, comparing to the last semester where I was not too sure about my makeup, hair, photography and writing skills, I can say that this semester I improved.
However, I must say that I enjoyed a lot more this semester because we did new things such as SFX makeup which was very interesting. I haven’t faced any issues lately because I tried to be more organized with everything.
Generally speaking, for makeup in motion this semester, we had two assessments: one was timed, and the other one was not timed.
For the first one, we had to choose a gothic horror novel from a list Kat gave us, and based on the chosen novel, we had to create a character. The hardest part was the research because we had to look at the character’s background and made a design that fitted the character’s story.
For this assessment, I chose to recreate Jane Eyre from the gothic horror novel ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte. I made that choice because her story captured and inspired me, as she was smart and brave, also different from the other girls at that time. I thought about recreating Jane Eyre in her own beauty because I liked that her style was pure Victorian.
The thing which was not that easy was to recreate the same design in the second part because it required a lot of attention and precision, but eventually I managed to make it almost the same.
In the second assessment, we were asked to choose a horror TV series from a list Kat gave us, to create two out of three characters, either Claudia, Quentin or Mrs Laderman and choose a word for each of them. The hardest thing, in my opinion, was to make up an eligible story for the characters and include them in one of the TV series. I chose the famous series ‘The Walking Dead’ where Claudia and Quentin were a part of it and I did special effects makeup because I wanted to show that they got bitten by a zombie.

All in all, I totally enjoyed the first year of makeup and hair design and I am definitely looking forward to the next one!

Final photos of Claudia and Quentin

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with how everything worked this time and I must say I did my best to create a realistic makeup for my characters.
Below there are my final photos for this assessment + other good pictures I like.

Claudia and Quentin's makeup transformation

As I said in the last post, I'm gonna be doing special effects makeup, making the characters look like they are transforming in zombies.
To create the bites I used gelatin (Asda), SupraColor and fake blood; and for the bruises, Supra Color as well & color spray from Kryolan.

Claudia

Quentin

I used the same process for both makeup looks and it took about one hour and half over all. It was the first time I used gelatin from grocery shop, but I am quite happy with the results and it's exactly what I learnt from Sue's practical sessions.

Claudia, Quentin, Mrs Laderman & The Walking Dead mood boards and story

MOOD BOARDS
-TWD-

-CLAUDIA- (chosen character)
WORD: Red Rave

-MRS LADERMAN-
WORD: Taste

-QUENTIN- (chosen character)
WORD: Glass Prisoner

THE STORY

Claudia and Quentin: a couple who still survives the zombie apocalypse all over the United States.
Claudia is 22 young woman who is in her first year of university, while Quentin is 23, in the second year at the same university as his girlfriend. Their families and friends were transformed in zombies during the apocalypse and they were the only survivors.
The couple starts their adventure in finding a safe place with other alive people. The first few weeks have been a nightmare because it was really hard to find food, water and a safe place where they can rest their minds and bodies.
One day, they were walking in the woods and find Rick's camp near a lake. Rick saw that they're good people, so he welcomes them in his camp with the other alive people. He told them a story about Mrs Laderman, who used to be a friend of theirs, but she got bitten by a zombie.
(...)
Eventually, Claudia and Quentin get bitten by the zombie Mrs Laderman, and their transformation in zombies starts slowly, but frightening. Claudia was bitten on the left shoulder, and there was blood everywhere, like a red rave. Quentin got bitten on the right hand, and was really shocked and frightened, he felt like he was a glass prisoner in his own universe.

Face charts for Claudia & Quentin

So for my chosen character's makeup, I thought about doing special effects using gelatin to make some zombie bites. But for the face, I'll be using a pale foundation to make them look 'dead' and I'll be doing dark circles under the eyes and bruises around the neck and hands.
I'm not gonna make them look like proper zombies, they will look like they are transforming in zombies.

The Walking Dead (TWD)

The Walking Dead is an American horror drama television series developed by Frank Darabont, based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Andrew Lincoln plays the show's lead character, sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes, who awakens from a months-long coma to confront a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. Grimes reunites with his family and becomes the leader of a group he forms with other survivors. Together they struggle to survive in and adapt to a world filled with zombies and some humans who are even more dangerous than the zombies themselves.
The first season through to the first half of the fifth season are at first set within the Atlanta metro area and then the surrounding countryside. Beginning with the second half of the fifth season, the series mainly takes place in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Walking Dead premiered in the U.S. on October 31, 2010, on the cable television channel AMC and internationally in November 2010 on Fox International Channels. AMC has renewed the series each year because of its consistently increasing Nielsen ratings, which have been unprecedentedly high for a cable series, including averaging the most 18- to 49-year-old viewers of any cable or broadcast television series during its third through sixth seasons. The series has been renewed for a 16-episode seventh season which will debut in October 2016. An AMC companion seriesFear the Walking Dead, debuted on August 23, 2015.
The series has been well received by critics and nominated for several awards, including the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: New Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama.

Light scars using moulds

Step-by-step

-Using a baby bud, apply the prosthetic glue on the the area where you want to apply the gelatin. Also, apply the glue on the gelatin as well and stick it on the skin and press it.
-Get rid of those edges by using a baby bud and witch hazel. Rub the gelatin across (from interior to exterior) and the edges are, in this way, burnt.
-Using baby powder , powder the area.
-Start coloring the wound using supra color in red and black.
-To look more realistic, apply wound filler in the hole with a hair grip, pencil or baby bud.
-Then, with a stipple sponge, apply fake blood all around it.

It can be removed by pulling off and clean the edges with surgical spirit.

Products used:
gelatin
prosthetic glue
wound filler
fake blood
supra color
surgical spirit
baby powder
witch hazel

Health and safety:

- Make sure the model does not do eye contact with the powder, surgical spirit or witch hazel.

Continuity assessment -s.w.o.t. analysis-

I believe this assessment was a lot harder than the Elizabethan one. I'm saying that because I, personally, have struggled with precision and details because it's really complicated to make the same makeup or hairstyle, especially, to look the same. The only difference between the first and second assessment I think it was the bun, probably because my model's hair was freshly washed the second time and it was harder to style the hair.
Anyway, I am not complaining because I'm sure the next time it's gonna be better and I had to learn from that. But I have to admit that no matter how hard you try, it's impossible to create exactly the same hairstyle or makeup.

Continuity assessment 2

Comparing both assessments, I must say that I did my best in the first one. I'm saying that because there is a small difference at the bun, but overall I tried to do everything as in the first place.

Continuity assessment 1

The first assessment went unexpectedly good and I'm personally pleased of the result. It helped a lot that my model was communicative, patient and on time. Because the makeup and the hairstyle were simple, it took me one hour to transform her (more or less) into Jane Eyre.

Practice for the Continuity Assessment

For this assessment, I was lucky of finding a suitable model for my character. I needed a beautiful blonde girl for Jane Eyre's character and I found one. Anyway, before the assessment we met once to practice. I didn't need to practice on my model more than once because the looms are quite simple.

HAIR

MAKEUP

Everything took me about an hour and after that I knew everything I had to do in order to achieve a better version of the look for the assessment.

Dirt & Dirty Teeth

Step-by-step (dirty teeth)

I put my model to smile for me with the teeth out. Using tooth enamel in black and a cotton bud, I gently applied the product on the teeth. The product has got a nail polish texture and dries really fast. It gives the illusion of dental caries and missing teeth.

After that, I used the same product (tooth enamel), but in a yellowish color to give the illusion of rotten teeth.

It looks gross, I know. But this is very easy to apply, as well to take off by using surgical spirit and a cotton bud.

Step-by-step (dirty, muddy hands)

To create this kind of look on the hands, you won't need proper mud, of course! All u need is water and clay which is used for sfx makeup. Mixed with water, the product has a mud texture and color.
To create the muddy hands look, I applied the product on my model's hand using my hands.

I dried the hand with the hair drier for 1 minute and then I applied some color spray and fake blood.

It can be easily taken off by washing everything with water and soap.

Products used:

tooth enamel
surgical spirit
water
clay
color spray
fake blood

Health and safety:

- None of the products are allergic, but make sure to work clean.
