Evaluation

I cannot believe I eventually managed to finish my first year in makeup & hair design!
I am exceptionally satisfied with the improvement of my skills and progression of who I am today. The makeup in motion practical sessions have been great on the grounds, that I learnt how to create designs inspired by the British history and horror series, how to work clean and correct, how to manage my time in order to achieve the tasks and to improve especially after failures.
To be completely honest, in this year of studying makeup & hair design, there were a lot of ups and downs for me because it took time while I got used to the system, teachers and classmates and, comparing to the last semester where I was not too sure about my makeup, hair, photography and writing skills, I can say that this semester I improved.
However, I must say that I enjoyed a lot more this semester because we did new things such as SFX makeup which was very interesting. I haven’t faced any issues lately because I tried to be more organized with everything.
Generally speaking, for makeup in motion this semester, we had two assessments: one was timed, and the other one was not timed.
For the first one, we had to choose a gothic horror novel from a list Kat gave us, and based on the chosen novel, we had to create a character. The hardest part was the research because we had to look at the character’s background and made a design that fitted the character’s story.
For this assessment, I chose to recreate Jane Eyre from the gothic horror novel ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte. I made that choice because her story captured and inspired me, as she was smart and brave, also different from the other girls at that time. I thought about recreating Jane Eyre in her own beauty because I liked that her style was pure Victorian.
The thing which was not that easy was to recreate the same design in the second part because it required a lot of attention and precision, but eventually I managed to make it almost the same.
In the second assessment, we were asked to choose a horror TV series from a list Kat gave us, to create two out of three characters, either Claudia, Quentin or Mrs Laderman and choose a word for each of them. The hardest thing, in my opinion, was to make up an eligible story for the characters and include them in one of the TV series. I chose the famous series ‘The Walking Dead’ where Claudia and Quentin were a part of it and I did special effects makeup because I wanted to show that they got bitten by a zombie.

All in all, I totally enjoyed the first year of makeup and hair design and I am definitely looking forward to the next one!

Final photos of Claudia and Quentin

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with how everything worked this time and I must say I did my best to create a realistic makeup for my characters.
Below there are my final photos for this assessment + other good pictures I like.

Claudia and Quentin's makeup transformation

As I said in the last post, I'm gonna be doing special effects makeup, making the characters look like they are transforming in zombies.
To create the bites I used gelatin (Asda), SupraColor and fake blood; and for the bruises, Supra Color as well & color spray from Kryolan.

Quentin

I used the same process for both makeup looks and it took about one hour and half over all. It was the first time I used gelatin from grocery shop, but I am quite happy with the results and it's exactly what I learnt from Sue's practical sessions.

Claudia, Quentin, Mrs Laderman & The Walking Dead mood boards and story

MOOD BOARDS
-TWD-

-CLAUDIA- (chosen character)
WORD: Red Rave

-MRS LADERMAN-
WORD: Taste

-QUENTIN- (chosen character)
WORD: Glass Prisoner

THE STORY

Claudia and Quentin: a couple who still survives the zombie apocalypse all over the United States.
Claudia is 22 young woman who is in her first year of university, while Quentin is 23, in the second year at the same university as his girlfriend. Their families and friends were transformed in zombies during the apocalypse and they were the only survivors.
The couple starts their adventure in finding a safe place with other alive people. The first few weeks have been a nightmare because it was really hard to find food, water and a safe place where they can rest their minds and bodies.
One day, they were walking in the woods and find Rick's camp near a lake. Rick saw that they're good people, so he welcomes them in his camp with the other alive people. He told them a story about Mrs Laderman, who used to be a friend of theirs, but she got bitten by a zombie.
(...)
Eventually, Claudia and Quentin get bitten by the zombie Mrs Laderman, and their transformation in zombies starts slowly, but frightening. Claudia was bitten on the left shoulder, and there was blood everywhere, like a red rave. Quentin got bitten on the right hand, and was really shocked and frightened, he felt like he was a glass prisoner in his own universe.

Face charts for Claudia & Quentin

So for my chosen character's makeup, I thought about doing special effects using gelatin to make some zombie bites. But for the face, I'll be using a pale foundation to make them look 'dead' and I'll be doing dark circles under the eyes and bruises around the neck and hands.
I'm not gonna make them look like proper zombies, they will look like they are transforming in zombies.
